Giovanni Gabrieli's Sonata Pian e Forte
|
Sonata Pian e Forte composed in 1597 by Giovanni Gabrieli for antiphonal performance at the St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, Italy. This is the first known composition to be written for specific instrumentation: two choirs, one of 3 trombones and cornett and one of 3 trombones and viola da braccio. Today, this is generally performed on modern brass instruments often including Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba. In this recording, it's been performed on Trumpet (David Nakazono) and Trombone (Eric Matthew Flanagan).

LégendeFrom intricate and soft flourishes to strong and glorious heights, as the title suggests, Légende takes the listener through a fantastic story. George Enescu explores the soft and muted trumpet here, helping to establish the diverse voice of the trumpet. I performed this during my senior recital in the Spring of 2017.
